Euro 2024 in Germany logo

Leipzig - Stadium

I'll always call the stadium in Leipzig the Zentralstadion. The modern arena, which sits like a space ship inside the terrace bowl of the old ground, is being called Leipzig Stadium for the Euros. That's a good thing for me, as being someone who values the huge involvement of fans in most clubs in Germany, I dislike giving credit to its sponsor (an Austrian fizzy drink company) by calling it by its sponsored name.

The current stadium was opened in 2004 in readiness for the 2006 World Cup, when Leipzig, as now for the 2024 Euros, was the only host city from the former East Germany. It has a capacity for club matches of 47,000, which will drop for the Euros to 42,558 due to the absence of any standing places at the tournament. I was last there in 2022 with Union for the cup semi-final.

Getting there from the city centre
Walk! From the main station and from Marktplatz square it takes about 30 minutes.

If you do want to take the tram, then from the station it's just a 9-minute ride (on, say, the number 3 heading for Leipzig, Sommerfeld) to the Sportforum Süd stop, from where it's a 10-minute walk to the ground.

If you have a match ticket or a rail pass such as Interrail or the Deutschlandticket, you'll not need to pay any fare. If not, it might be worth getting a Leipzig Card for free 1- or 3-day travel on local public transport, plus discounts to many attractions.

For getting to the stadium straight from the airport, see my Leipzig/Halle Airport page.

To keep this page uncluttered, I've not included any photos. Instead, I've put together a selection in this Leipzig City and Stadium Gallery
