Euro 2024 in Germany logo

Düsseldorf - Stadium

I have to admit that the Merkur Spiel-Arena is not the sort of ground I like. It's a multi-purpose arena with a closing roof. You may recall that it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest final in 2011.

It's also quite some way out of town, located in a soulless exhibition grounds complex, so there are no pubs or restaurants nearby. However, it serves a purpose, and if your team wins there, I don't suppose you'll mind too much (unfortunately, on my last visit there Union lost, so perhaps that has something to do with my negative view of the place too!).

Games being held at the stadium
The Euro 2024 matches being staged at the ground are listed here.

Getting there from the city centre
Being part of a big trade fair complex, the arena does at least have a handy underground stop. Here are a couple of example journeys from the city centre:

Main station (Hauptbahnhof) to the arena
Take the U78 underground heading for D-MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA/Messe Nord. Get out at that stop, the end of the line. Journey time: 20 minutes.

Altstadt (Old Town) to the arena
Get on the underground at Heinrich-Heine Allee underground station. Take the U78 underground heading for D-MERKUR SPIEL-ARENA/Messe Nord. Get out at that stop, the end of the line. Journey time: 16 minutes.

If you have a match ticket or a rail pass such as Interrail or the Deutschlandticket, you'll not need to pay any fare. If not, and you're planning on doing some sightseeing in the region as well as going to the match, it might be worth getting free regional travel with a WelcomeCard Ruhr.

Getting there from the aiport
For getting to the ground straight from the airport, see my Düsseldorf Airport page. If you're flying with Ryanair into Weeze, then for directions to the stadium go to the Weeze Airport page.

For the Euros, by the way, the ground has been given the imaginative name of 'Düsseldorf Arena'.

To keep this page uncluttered, I've not included any photos. Instead, I've put together a selection in this Düsseldorf City and Stadium Gallery
