Travelling by rail - When to buy

Click flag for tickets on first release date

Most train tickets in Germany go on sale 180 days in advance on the Deutsche Bahn website

DB rival Flixbus/Flixtrain, however, puts its tickets on sale further in advance, and all Euro 2024 can now be booked (with many train fares under €10).

The first sales dates for DB train tickets during the Euros are as follows (earlier dates are already on sale). Tap or click the flags showing the relevant ticket release date to go straight to the Deutsche Bahn journey planner for the travel date shown.

25% off ticket prices with a BahnCard

Note that if you're planning to make multiple train journeys in Germany in the summer, it may pay to buy a BahnCard 25, which will give you 25% off most rail ticket prices, including Saver and Super Saver tickets.

You can buy a Trial BahnCard 25 for €19.90. It’s valid for 3 months from the first day of validity. It can be cancelled subject to giving 6 weeks’ notice. So, if the sums add up for you, you could buy one on the Deutsche Bahn website in, say, May and cancel it with effect of the end of July.

If you decide to do this, then when buying your tickets on the dates above, be sure to indicate where prompted that you will be the holder of a BahnCard 25 when making your journey. You will then be shown the discounted fare. On the day of your journey, you will need to show your Card along with your ticket (and possibly photo ID) to the ticket inspector on the train.
